In Laos people spread New Year greetings and warm wishes through the medium of water. We saw people sprinkling water over Buddha statues, plants, even cars. In the morning I had the odd spray of water from a few small children which was pretty nice considering the heat. But as the day got hotter it went from a friendly trickle to full scale ambush... and there was no avoiding it. On both sides of the street tiny children sprayed water pistols with cute plastic cartoon backpacks of water, and not so cute teams of adults chucked pans of colourful water directly down my back or chest, or sprayed my face with hosepipes and big fierce water pistols. Si got into the flow of things (that was my very own pun!) and filled an empty bottle to join in and we literally dripped our way along the street! I'm not sure where the red dye and black car grease come in but we both got smeared all over our faces and arms with all sorts of grime. The air was full of shrieks and laughter and shouts of "Saibadee Pi Mai!". It was so much fun! After a few hours we got tired and went for a hot shower and to change, and were very relieved our sooty black faces washed clean. Heading back out for dinner in clean dry clothes an hour later we must've looked boringly unscathed... we only made it 10 metres!
