Normandie, France
James, who is very interested in the 2nd world war, managed to get 20/20 in a school test so as promised off we went to Normandy to visit the D-Day beaches! We rented a huge house on the sea front at Grandcamp Maisy- only one proble the fuses kept blowing as the heating was all electric !
Saturday morning we started our visit by stopping at the Point du Hoc ! a shear cliff face where a sad amount of Americans lost their lives to take the German cannons that were attacking the fleet !
It is not possible to visit the beaches without thinking of all those poor young men who died for our freedom, we paid our respects and visited the American cemetary at Collville, they have an excellent museam with lots of short video clips
We then visited Arromanches with Port Winston, a artificial port made after D-DAY to enable supplies to be bought into France as the Germans were holding all the "real" ports!
We went to the museam in Arromanches too ! Good film to watch.
On Sunday before leaving we went to Saint Mere L'église famous for the parachutist who got caught up in the church steeple but survived the severe cross fire by pretending to be dead, unfortunately the museams were closed at lunch time and we didn't want to leave to late!
We went to UTAH beach where unexpectedly we found a small museum by the beach which was fantastic ! They had a DUCW (I'll have to ask James for the correct spelling) that the children were allowed to get in and "drive"
Then we had to leave for our return trip home !
Brilliant weekend enjoyed by all !
