Well I would like to say that our bad luck ended there but unfortunately it only got worse. My camera was stolen on a quiet street at a little organic coffee bar. I was/am devastated. I think for the first two days I just felt so silly, how I could have been so stupid and let the camera be stolen! Dan was very good and calm as I kept crying off and on.
Over the course of four-five days we have been to police stations and called numerous times our insurance company. We went in search of a replacement camera but the people we so rude and we found one too many cameras that looked second hand being sold at full cost. Eventually one more we both admitted that despite our desperation to buy another camera for our jungle tour our gut instinct was telling us that Bolivia was not the place to do it. La Paz had been bad luck and we didn't want to encourage more coming our way. So we unfortunately a minus a fantastic camera but luckily have another average one.
La Paz is a strange city. It is very steep in many sections, when you sit in a café and look out, the cars going past seem as though they are being swallowed by the road. There are lots of cholitas (women who wear traditional clothing and live in the city) selling anything and everything. I have to admit I have found some of these women a little off putting for a few reasons. One I have seen one too many just drop their stockings and piss in the street. Two they don't seem to wash their clothes regularly and yet they 'drip dry' many times a day. Three they blow their noses on their clothes. Four they serve food with the hands that they have blown snot into or touched raw meat.
Those that know me understand that I am not great with bodily fluids…so all of this was a bit too much. The other three were also very disturbed when we saw a cholita pee in a gutter and at the same time let out a roaring fart. In Dan's words 'that fart will haunt me forever.'
We stayed near the witches markets which is not as exciting as it sounds. It mainly sells replicas of ancient pottery and dried lama foetuses. Mum and Annette we looked for a potion but reconsidered as we were worried La Paz's bad luck would rub off on you both.
The best thing about La Paz was the variety in the food. I have been really off of meat, I think cause of the stomach bug and so have been in search of anything and everything vegetarian. We managed to find thanks to Lonely Planet excellent Japanese, Lebanese, Indian and muesli , woo hoo!
Jehanna and Joel have decided to not go come to the amazon and so for now we have gone our separate ways. It feels strange it being just the two of us again. It has been the four of us for nearly three weeks.
The next location is Rurrenabaque and from there a pampas and jungle tour. We are both really looking forward to leaving La Paz.
