After our short side-trip into the Highlands we made our way into Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital. Having heard some negative comments about this sprawling city I wasn't really sure what to expect. We were staying in the middle of Chinatown and therefore had to navigate our way through the noisy market stalls to our hotel. The population of KL, as with elsewhere in Malaysia, is mainly Chinese and therefore you can definitely feel a strong undercurrent of Chinese culture as you wander around the city. For dinner we made our way, via a very efficient railway system, to the Petronas Twin Towers as some of the group would not be able to go up them because they were going to watch the Moto GP the following day. These 88 storey high iconic images tower into the city's sky and are designed to replicate Islamic artistic motifs. Under them lies the very large KLCC Shopping Mall containing multiple big brand names including M&S, Topshop and Gucci. The Food Court here was where we were headed. These courts are a fantastic idea as it means that each person can choose what type of food they want to eat and makes the whole dining experience hassle free. After a quick photoshoot under the Towers, we decided to go for a "quick" drink at the local Reggae Bar. However Katie & I remained, expending our pent up energy on the dance floor, until the early hours of the morning. We eventually made it home although I will never understand how a 2 minute walk around the corner turned into a half hour trek round Chinatown. Bleary-eyed and feeling slightly worse for wear, I emerged at 7.30 am, having volunteered to help Johann collect the tickets for the Towers the previous evening. Although free, only a limited amount of tickets are released every day, so we needed to get in quickly. We were only allowed up to the Skybridge on the 41st floor as the Towers contain the offices of Petronas, as well as Microsoft, Bloomberg and Al Jazeira. The views from this bridge were amazing, spanning out over the whole city. Our next trip was to ascend the Menara KL Tower, so the 5 of us (Louise, Sarah, Jenny, Mary & me) plus Johann trooped over to this equally symbolic building. This was built in 1995 and reaches 421m, the 5th tallest tower in the world. Unfortunately the weather had turned a little when we reached the top (the lift only took 53 seconds!!!) but the views were still pretty awesome. The funniest thing happened when we returned to the base. A monkey had snuck up on one of the food stands and, having stolen a box of chocolates, proceeded to run along the rooftop proudly clasping his trophy. He was very cute, although the shopkeeper probably didn't feel the same. As it was just us girls (plus Johann) we decided that it was time for some retail therapy so we headed for Times Square. This is a shopping centre, unrivalled in size, and even contains an indoor theme park. Since I am not a great fan of fair rides I took a wander around before attempting to find my way home. However, my map-reading skill failed me once again and I ended up, a little lost, on the opposite side of town in a rather random place called Pudu. After a rather pleasant chat with a Chinese guy, I thankfully was pointed in the right direction. When I finally arrived back we decided to return to the Reggae Bar for a chillout afternoon. The Reggae Bar was my favourite bar of the whole trip with awesome music and friendly people, especially the rather bouncy waitress, Jessie (actually a he!!!!). The night soon drew to a close though as we had to catch an early bus out of KL for Melaka, our next port of call before moving into Singapore.
