OOOOOKay. .... here goes my first (ever) blog.
So, Liz, Chris, Sam and I all set off from Heathrow a few days ago and endured a rather comfortable flight courtesy of Etihad airways, complete with a GnT at 10am....what better way to start eh?!
when we landed in Bangkok, via Abu Dahbi, we went straight to our hostel and slept for about 6 hours....as if we hadnt had enough sleep on the 16 hr flight! but we woke up to a small monsoon so decided to sleep some more before going to hunt and gather food. But when we finally did...we struck lucky; we found this street vendour (dont worry, not had any reactions so far -touch wood) who sold a varirty of noodle soups. Now, trying to test the language barrier on day one..explainign 'vegetarian' was a bit of a struggle..and for some reason, unbeknown to me.. i just kept repeating it in french (i blame the panic and the jetlag, and the hunger). nevertheless, i got a (mostly) meat-free dish that was incredible and only cost 25BT (about 60p). Then after dinner and a wander we were convinvced into a massage place (although there was little convincing involved) where the four of us preceded to be lead up a set of dark stairs to a small room with 4 beds in where we were instructed to get into what i can only describe as 'asylum pyjamas' (if youve been to anywhere like this, im sure you know the ones!!) we were in fits of laughter, especially as the boys were given matching hawaiian shirts to don aswell! we lay there for an housr being twisted and stretched and it was bliss- all at the expense of about $3 (cant find the pound sign on this keyboard) . After that we just bought some local beer (Chang) and headed back to the guesthouse for a chilled eve.
The next day we went on a nice boat tour that meandered through the back waterways of bangkok before visiting the reclining buddah. We had also read in the rough guide that the best view of the city was from one of the many skybars across town...and seeing as there was one at the State tower (near us) we decided to scrub up and make our way up for an evening cocktail......ooh.my.word. it was like walking into a movie... i was deffinatley not cool enough to be there but we stayed anyway! they were right too... the view was incredible...but at $14 a drink, it should be!.... needless to say we stocked up on the complementary nuts as dinner was off the cards (we realise that for london prices thats pretty standard, but for here you get used to paying peanuts!)
I better finish this one up quickly as we are about to catch a night train to Laos, which i am really excited about (lord knows why) but just before i go.... we went to the weekend market today for a good 6 hours...its HUUUUGE...im not joking, there are 8000, yes, eight thousand stalls there. It was grand. then we hopped in a cab and went to our favourite noodle vendour to have another delcios and cheap dinner before we board the train. Anyway, must dash, gotta a train to catch..... il update again soon and i hope you are all well. How is england by the way??
lots of love,
Soph xxx
