Soongies' Great Adventure
It was meant to be a night for aurora viewing so Calvin stepped out into the cold night at around 2:30 am. Kate slept right through. It was crisp and clear outside however it was still twilight and too bright to see any northern lights if they were occurring. Being the second day of official Icelandic summer meant that there was no longer any night - just astronomic twilight. It was still a nice time to wander around the quiet shore and photograph the white mountains under the stars. It was a nice short drive from Borgarnes to Keflavik - only about 90 mins. There was a beautiful scenic part along the coast where it looked like sand and ocean but it was snow and ocean! At one stage snowflakes were pelting down with heavy wind and then five minutes later, the sun came out. We arrived at the hostel in Keflavik at about midday, not sure if we were able to check in that early. We only had to wait 10 minutes before we could check in. In that time we used the free tea and coffee facilities to make ourselves a hot chocolate. We were very ready for a relaxing afternoon so it involved using our leftover 2 minute noodles to make lunch, having a nap, chilling out and doing a much needed massive load of washing! We had to leave the hostel at about 5:15 to get to the Blue Lagoon at our pre-booked time of 6:00 so we had an early dinner of leftovers - pasta, a can of veggies and cabbage. The drive into Blue Lagoon was impressive - there were moss covered lava fields everywhere! Blue Lagoon, one of the 25 wonders of the world, was lovely! The average temperature in the lagoon was about 38 degrees celsius, but there were patches that were hotter and cooler. We wandered around, occasionally coming across mud under foot which was a bit weird. Calvin got himself a complimentary silica mud mask to apply in the water 3 times. We skipped on the drinks at the swim up bar as they were a little on the pricey side! We waded around for about 1.5 hours before it got a bit too hot (and itchy). Just before we were about to get out, Calvin realised that a lot of water had made its way into his waterproof camera (as the bit where the HDMI/charger cable jacks are had opened). Luckily when we got back to the hostel, Calvin managed to download the photos from the camera onto the laptop - phew! No photos lost but now in possession of a water filled camera. We had a relatively early night (which is a bit weird when it is still so bright outside) as we had a 3:30am wake up the next day for our flight back to Manchester.
