Yes, I know, I'm an updating machine!
Anyway, we went to Palazzolo Acreide for Carnevale, which is about 40km away from Siracusa, up in the mountains. Sicily does carnevale a little bit differently than venice, as I found out. Floats would circle through 3 different piazzas, people were dancing to a dj in the piazza del popolo, shaving cream and silly string in addition to confetti, and best of all, the bopper. Yes, the bopper. People would have soft plastic, rubber, or inflated mallets and would walk around bopping others on the head, for reasons unknown to me. Supposedly common to Sicily, but I haven't seen anyone doing that in Siracusa. In fact, I haven't seen a whole lot of celebration in Siracusa; little kids dressed up (like halloween) and confetti on the streets, but not much else going on.
So we arrived, scoped out the main piazza, and grabbed zeppole, which are fried balls of dough covered in either powdered sugar, nutella, honey, or caramel. Yum. We watched more floats go by, and I saw many women going around in trios, all dressed alike, dancing the same dance moves in a little triangle. odd. We then moved on to grab drinks and dance like crazy, especially to popular favorites like YMCA (they looooove the YMCA song). We partied hard until 11pm, when it was time to go home.
