I feel like death this morning.... I don't think I slept more than 4 hours.... must have been the alcohol.
I decided to visit the Pinnacles National Park which is slightly south east of Monterey, so I had a little travelling to do, but no matter. I was annoyed when setting out cos the Tourist Info office was not open until 10am, and then the 17-mile scenic coastal drive was closed for a race... bloody runners should still be relaxing in bed on a Sunday like normal people. The road to the national park was past farmlands & small Mexican looking towns. Closer to the park was vineyards & the ground looked very dry. I kept thinking of the national parks I had seen in Australia when I was there in '95, and this was similar, but I guess on a smaller scale. Well at least the small part that I saw was small. It appears to be a popular place for hikers & climbers cos when I was walking along the trails, I kept hearing voices & they were coming from the peaks above me. I am neither a hiker, nor a climber & it was very hot weather & I had not taken water with me, so needless to say I did not venture too far from the car park & probably did not experience the best of the national park.Driving back to Santa Cruz, I stopped for a drink in this tiny town where I think I was the only caucasion. Not that I was particularly bothered, this was merely an observation. Another town I passed through made me chuckle - Castroville - artichoke capital. Again, these were all Mexican looking towns.
I thought Santa Cruz was a total dump & I was so disappointed by it, but it was too late in the day to move on. I really should have, but no matter. Think Blackpool. Nice!!! My hotel was cheap, with Wi-fi and close to the beach area & pier. Dinner was crab cakes which were edible.
