SINGAPORE
We arrived in Singapore early on the 14/04/2009 after a 12 hour flight from Heathrow. The flight was spent with Matt and I watching film after film on our personal little tv which wasnt that far from our heads, Matt's eyes hurt so much from staring!
We got off the flight and swiftly boarded the MRT- Singapores equivilent to the London Underground- however this experience was wholely different. The MRT is so utterly clean, no graffiti is allowed. Food, Drink, Smoking, Littering and Durian?! (i found out it is a small, spikey fruit which has a very very sweet smell which alot of people don't like!)
The terminals are also so clean, here no loitering or leaning is allowed, along with the previously mentioned!
Found our hostel quickly with no problems and our room was suprisingly nice; queen size bed, wadrobes, mirror and AIR-CON! That was a definate plus as it is so humid here!
We then went straight to sleep for about 6hrs!
When we awoke we took a trip to Sentosa- Singapore's answer to Disney Land, sort of! It had a number of things here, A monorail, Sky tower, Underwater world, Songs of the Sea which is a music and light performance, but wasnt quite was we were expecting!
We only chose a couple of attractions being the sky tower and songs of the sea as it was all pretty pricey! Not just Sentosa but all of Singapore! It's about $9 for a beer (4.50 pounds) and meals are around $13, not for budget travellers like us!
After Sentosa we arrived back on mainland Singapore and took a rather long walk back to the hostel, we walked along the quay and found a statue of Merlion, a made up creature from the sea which is half lion and half fish- Matt loved it! We also found a Statue of John Raffles- He is very famous here! But we didnt have time for a Singapore Sling- the are ten pounds each thou!
We also visited China town and had some lovely food, it would have been more lovely if there hadnt have been so many touts coming upto us, made the experience a little less authentic!
Day two was spent with some more walking, first around Little India where we found some bustling streets, with quite a few Westeners, there don't seem to be many in Singapore!
Had some lunch where we were given what i thought was an unusual place matt- it was a banana leaf- and when our meals arrived I asked for a plate, and the waiter told me that this was my plate, he thought it was very funny and so did everyone else I have told! HAHA!
We then took a walk to our friends , Maja and Adam's hotel who are staying in Singapore and found a bar which had a happy hour! Still a bit pricey thou but not too bad! We then took a walk to Arab Street, a little area of Singapore filled with Egyptian and Arab Resturants also with sheesha, a nice relaxed evening!
Day three was again spent having lunch in Little India, with Maja and Adam in a lovely vegetarian resturant, I was so stuffed though- i'm not all that hungry in the heat!
In the evening we went to the night safari! There was an option to take a tram round we us cost cutting lot decided to walk round and i'm so glad we did, we saw so many animals right up close, if it hadnt been for the barriers we would have been touching them! My favourite was the Malaysian Tiger. My least favourite was the fruit bat enclosure! Maja lovingly dragged me in- thankyou! But I survived with none of them getting caught in my hair!
Other highlights were the Hyenas, they are pretty scary animals looking at us right in the face, very happy there was a nice big barrier! The Lions were also breathtaking- we saw 3 males, all brothers and beautiful.
I loved being in the zoo at night, it felt like u were on a safari, it was so quiet, not many crowds at all. And such a variety of species. Unfortunatley no flash photography was allowed and our camera wasn't upto scratch to take such low level of light photos so we dont have many but we have our memories!!!
We have just checked out of our hotel and in about half an hour will be on a bus to the Singapore- Malaysian boarder. From there we are heading to Melaka (Mallaca) for a couple of nights and then to the Tioman islands where Maja, Megan and Adam are and Matt will do his open water PADI whilst I snorkell! The marine life is supposed to be amazing, lots of turtles and sharks! We will let you know!
Thats How for Now! Siany xx
