Well what can I say in regards to Siem Reap!?!? Absolutely breath taking amazing amazing amazing!
Having recovered sufficiently enough from our hang overs on Weds night, we got up on Friday morning and got a tuk tuk to pick up Matt from his guest house and then went onto the temples. Angkor Wat was just amazing - huge, beautiful, peaceful, I loved it. Gemma and Matt got ripped off when we got in there though, as we walked in some Cambodian dude shoved incense into their hands and made them pray to some b******sy statue and then charged them 5 bucks for the priviledge! I did it too but being the tight git that I am I refused to put down more than a dollar - we didnt even know if he worked there - he was prob just some random that rips off tourists!
We walked all around and inside Angkor Wat, and in the middle Gemma and I got a blessing from some official dudes. You had to kneel down and then they gave you this thing like a pack of cards that you had to hold on your head, and then part the pack with a little stick then they read out the blessing. We interpreted them slightly differently and the meanings may have been lost in translation but basically what I gathered from Gemmas was that she's forgiven for any wrong doing in the past, and mine was that I'd be protected from people who try to hurt me.....either way it was a nice thing to do and you just donated whatever you wanted to them and they gave us a wristband. We felt very serene after that ha ha!
When we went outside Angkor Wat to get a drink we spotted some monkeys in the trees, I tried to get a picture of them but the were too far away so we carried on walking and as we got down to the bit where the little food stalls were there was a big ugly moody monkey sitting on one of the red plastic chairs as if he was a tourist! Was so funny, he even 'went' for one of the dogs that was sniffing around. He reminded me of a few people I know!
We went to another couple of temples after that - Bayon was my absolute fave, its the the one in the picture for this blog - with the faces in the rocks - awesome. On the way there it started pouring it down and the tuk tuk had to stop for a while as it was imposible to drive in, when we got to Bayon it had slowed up a bit but by the time we came out it was torrential rain again and we got drenched!
We were meant to stay there to see the sunset but with the rain there was no point so we tuk tuked home and booked our bus ticket to Laos for the next day (Saturday). Then Gemma and I went for a wander round the market (in the rain) and back to the guesthouse for dinner and to pack as our Laos bus was pickin us up at 5am the following morning!
I look like a proper traveller now (not the fun fair kind!) I have purple fake Havanas ($3 from the market), HUGE HUGE HUGE baggy trousers on - think Aladdin and you'll be able to visualise. When we first arrived in Asia I thought they were horrendous and wouldnt be seen dead in them but now they are the height of traveller chic and I couldnt be without them. Also have a million bracelets made by local kids from places we've been to up one arm, and a red buddhist string around the other wrist. A great big hippy head band on my head with my hair loose and mad - I havent brushed my hair in a good 4 days now.......I'm a million miles away from the makeup wearing, perfume spraying, straightned hair girl that I was 2 montsh ago - and I've never been happier!
