POWELL BUTTE, Oregon
12:30 Thur
After a restless night I got up and finished the packing and animal feeding details. Took the dogs to the kennel (Taz & J'Cub). Once back home, finished packing and headed off to the dealership to get screws to attach my wind deflectors on the bike. Fueled up and was on the road.
The ride to KFalls was nice, temp just right. After Gilcrest I got a bit sleepy. Stopped for food and hydration. I walked out of the store and there were two couples in their ~60's were standing admiring the bike. When they realized I was the owner they smiled. I made the comment "I bet you didnt expect the bike belonged to a chick' we all laughed. Well wishes and I was back on the road in good spirits.
Got to Running Y about 4:30pm. I noticed a 'rubbing noise'. I unloaded the bike - still a noise. I called Ron then headed to Outlaw bike shop, a local shop Ron had checked out previously. I pulled up and looked down from pavement upon a gravel driveway and a carport with about 10 people who fit the stereotypical image of bikers. The scariest were the 3 or so women. Then I remembered, I am a biker also. So I road down the slope to the carport/shop. Out walks a 6ft+ tall man with long hair and in regular biker wear. (jeans and tee shirt). I wondered for a moment what he may have thought. Here is a chick on a new Street glide with matching jacket, scarf, and fingernails. He questioned me on why I was there. I realized he was testing me. So I informed him of the sound, by now I have several men around my bike and women glaring from a safe distance. I explained the event of the day and that the sound had just started. I motioned him over with my index finger to whisper my bike goes 'swish, swish, swish,. I had to repeat it and then he broke out in laughter. 'Yeah, your ol' man called and told me you were on the way'. He took the bike for a test ride. When he returned he explained that the clutch was out of adjustment. but the noise required putting my bike on the lift. Which currently held a rear tireless bike. He asked when I needed my bike back. I explained in one hour, but I could go to 6a.m. He looked at me and reinforced that he had a bike on the rack. With out missing a beat I asked 'and how long will it take you to get that bike down and my up there. I think he was taken aback by my insistant expectation. He told me to go out to dinner and he would call me. By now Ron was there. I slowly realized that the men that ran this shop and hung out there were Gypsy Jokers, they represented well.
Off to Applebee's for dinner. The phone call came and it was not good news. The rear brake disc was out of alignement and 10:1000th warpped, 'alot' I am told. At some point the disc got very HOT. So we devised a plan which involved us going to Medford in the morning to get a part from the HD dealership at Pheonix. It was 7pm at this time. That night we packed up Ron's stuff in the chalet and moved it to the work office. Then we settled in.
Fri 6/22
Up at 5:45am we loaded our gear into the work rig. Moved Ron's bike to the airport. Then went to pheonix. (via greensprings hwy)
The dealership had the part and 20 min there and we were on our way 60 miles back to KFalls by 9:30am. When we got to Keno we called Outlaw as they requested to let them know we were close. We got to Outlaw and nobody was there. The business next door said there was a big boy scout event and the owner was there. A sign on the door stated they'd be backat 12N, it was 10:00. So,we unloaded our luggage and Ron took the work rig to switch for his bike. Fortunately when in Pheonix, we stopped at a Best Western and had them call Elko to let them know we would be in late.
Now it's looking later.... Longes stretch is Kfalls to Winnamucca, then from Winnamucca 150 miles further to Elko.
So I wait in a chair in the shade outside Outlaw bike shop, alone. It could be worse. There is VERY little between KFalls, Winnamucca, and Elko, just desert. The next HD dealership from Pheonix east is Salt Lake City. So, I'll be patient. Chances of a Harley certifaied tech in teh forementioned areas are very slim.
waiting......
He arrived at 12:30 by 3:30 he got finished. Had a disagreement with a rude warrenty person on the phone. Rude to the mechanic, rude to me, (asked me if I knew my bike was new when I bought it) how insulting. Ron hung up on him and I decided to deal with this warrenty issue after the trip.
Bid far3well to Lance andwet to get gas 4:00pm. There was a line at the gas station, so Ron wanted to go to the next town. 'Dairy' not even a store, it used to be a town at one time. So we cut over to Bonanza got some regular feul and added octane booster. We were able to replace the bottle of booster from the local store there. Met James, a 20 something with a truck and a dog. He was jazzed to see us on the bikes. We had good convesation with him. We departed to Lakeview.
At Lakeview we fueled up, hydrated, and had a snickers, it was very windy. Ron called and cancelled the Elko motel reservation and got one in Winnamucca. We met two men on BMWs one was duct taped together. They had been to Alaska. They even went on the upper highway that they reported was mud and they had to carry their own fuel. Koodos to them.
We rode out of Lakeview. The road was winding not much wind. Teh out ont he desert at about 6000 ft Ron's bike got energetic and came into its own. Being form Colorado his bike was loving the higher elevation. We picked up the pace to 80-85 mph. After a bladder bursting rest stop (drank a lot of water at Lakeview). Somewhere out on the desert about 15 miles from the steep cliff incline the road was blocked.
