Shawn and I left for Calgary early on Saturday morning. We were both pretty groggy from the night before as I had played a pre-performance with the electronic rock band, The Rabbid Whole. Shawn's dad was a sweetheart and picked us up at 8am and took us for breakfast before we had to board the plane closer to 10. We arrived in Calgary an hour later and rented a vehicle from Budget (which I will never do again - they have such poor customer service!!) Almost an hour later we were on the road to Miriel's house in the North End! After some hugs from and her super cute roommate Andrea, we headed to Chinook mall for a bit of shopping but I had to constrain myself for buying too much (must save for HAWAII!). After some yummy chicken from the Bourbon St Grill (my most favourite "fastfood" restaurant), we went for a nice walk in Eau Claire Centre & Princess Island Park, which is a huge park in Calgary that I highly recommend to city visitors! After some walking in the gorgeous 27C weather, we headed back to Miriel's for a BBQ and then met up with Kristie and a bunch of their friends for a night on the town. Unfortunately, the night ended up being more of a big walk as we had left Melrose Cafe and Bar at 11pm only to find huge lines outside of the bar that we REALLY wanted to go to, the Drum and Monkey. So our night was kinda' crummy one but will make it better next Saturday (when Shawn and I are back again).
The following day, we all woke up pretty late and Miriel made banana and coconut crepes for brunch. After some morning tanning on their patio, Miriel, Shawn, Andrea and I headed downtown to Olympic Plaza to cool off in the water. We also discovered the hat lady while we were at it. Soon afterwards, Andrea left to go to work at Julio Barrio's (delish Mexican restaurant in Kensington) and the three of us headed to the Dowes' home in a super nice, upscale neighbourhood in the South End. This was such a wonderful visit for me - the Dowes' were super good friends with my Irish grandparents way back in the 60's and 70's in London Ontario, where a small people from Ireland had migrated to. They were such a sweet couple to invite us over and Miriel has adopted them as her grandparents in Calgary (actually, all of our grandparents have passed for several years now), and we also met some other friends of the family, including their daughter, who mom used to babysit. We also discovered that their son Michael, who lives in Montreal, is a film producer and director and directed movies such as Fubar and worked on the set of Much Music!
After a delicious BBQ and great visit, Shawn and I said our goodbyes to Miriel and headed out to Banff to check into the Rimrock Resort (www.rimrockresort.com).
