Shane and Sarah's Adventures
Hey everyone,
Well we are still enjoying every moment of our tour thru amazing Africa. We left Swakopmund after a fantastic few days of chilling and adrenaline and headed for Sesreim. On the way we stopped at the smallest known town in Namibia for their famous Apple Pie (it was pretty good). Visited Sesreim Canyon which is only about 25m deep and 18km long, but still a site worth seeing and exploring.
The next morning we were up about 2 hours before sunrise and made our way to Sossusvlei to the famous Dune 45 which is 120m high. The challenge was to make our way to the top and see the sunrise and get some awesome pics. Only Jo, Irish, Bec's and ourselves made it all the way. It was pretty hard slog especially if you were the one at the front which both of us got to experience. Following breaky at the bottom of the dune we went with a bushman on a tour of the Sossusvlei area. He explained the habitat of the fauna and wildlife on the dunes - showing us a trapdoor spider (goodness knows how he found it under the sand), plants that can keep you hydrated for a number of days, and how the bushman stored water in ostrich eggs when living in the Sossusvlei area. He was incredibly interesting and had lots of stories and anecdotes which made us laugh. One of the dunes sits at 450 metres high. Glad we didn't have to walk to the top of that one!
From Sossusvlei we made our way to Fish River Canyon (with a stopover in the Helmeringhausen area). The canyon is the second largest in the world (161km long, 550m deep and approx. 1 billion years old). Incredible sight and quite breathtaking. After walking around a partial edge we sat and watched the sun go down behind the canyon.
The next day we headed further south and crossed the border in to South Africa, stopping for the night at Orange River. This river flows from the west of S.A and Lesotho and due to the heavy rains in those areas in recent times, the river was the highest it has been for some time. The weather was incredibly hot, but unfortunately we could not swim in the river due to the strong currents and had to cool off with cold showers instead.
The next day, the 17th March, was our final journey on the truck towards Cape Town. Also St Pat's day of course so we enjoyed the last day with a few celebratory drinks. Arrived in Cape Town at around 4.00pm with amazing views of the famous Table Top mountain.
So we made it! 56 days on the truck was quite an experience! Loved every (almost) minute of it, met some fantastic people and have seen some incredible sights.
Now enjoying Cape Town and currently nursing some sore legs from our trek up and down Table Mountain! First impressions of Cape Town are excellent. Great vibe, great food and wine, cool shops and fantastic coastline.
Will send a further post card from SA soon.
Lots of love
