Up up and away...
Left Heathrow on time and watched the take off from the forward facing camera on the seat back monitor. Up in the air now so movie time, Battleship. Not the best I know but passed some time. Meal time now. Prawn cocktail starter, Chicken and veg main with apple lattice for after. Quite nice and all washed down with a cuppa. Right film watched meal eaten and a bit of my book read, what to do now for the other 8 1/2 hours. The flight was ok and quite comfortable but the plane was a bit dated and could have done with a spruce up but the stewardesses were very nice and helpful. Drinks were free and the 3 meals were nice, the chicken mentioned before and the breakfast 3 hours before arrival. The only bad bit of the journey was Mr Twitch on the seats behind us, he had 2 seats to himself which he obviously didn't feel was enough and on several occasions tried to shove his legs through the back of mine. He was about 2 twitching fits away from a diversion to the nearest airport, I can tell you.
Final approach..
Descending into Colombo now and about 30 mins left till touch down. The temperature on the ground is 30 degrees and as soon as we step of the plane don't we just know it. A quick and uneventful passage through immigration and a surprisingly quick baggage collection and we were out to find our private car transfer waiting at the exit for us. A pleasant little fellow well dressed and polite led us out to the front of the airport where we waited for him to fetch around or transport. He returned with Toyota van, minibus, car thingy and took Fiona's bag from her at which point another gent popped up from nowhere and insisted on taking my bag a whole 2 metres to the back of the wagon. He then stood in the door with outstretched hand. The cost of this mammoth task that I never even asked for.......£1
The 45 minute taxi ride was an experience in itself as we sat in our reclining seat's - not because they could be reclined I might add but because that's the way they were riveted to the floor of the wagon. The air conditioning unit that was gaffer taped to the roof was doing little to ease the sweating as we made our way through the streets of Colombo. All credit to our driver he got us there safe and sound and I would recommend the experience to anyone. It's a different way of life and A world away from what we are used to. Pockets of poverty along side beautiful homes. Huts at the side of the road make up half of the main shopping streets as we pass through Negombo. Another 10 minutes and we are there. The Club Hotel Dolphin.
