17th - 18th MayHarvey Bay (Incl. Fraser Island)After a long and reluctant day drive from Yeppon (Keppel Island) we finally arrived in the evening at Harvey Bay.Harvey Bay is the port from which some of the famous Fraser Island tours start.Fraser Island is dead famous as it's supposed to be so beautiful, but we where skeptical about how great it would be as it would surely be overrun with tourists and nothing like our wonderfully beautiful and private Keppel Island. It was a beautiful island, but we were right to some extent.Keppel Island still rocked! If you want to know more about the island, we'll it pretty huge and you can't really tour it in one day. They tend to do 3 day tours if you want to see all the highlights. It's the biggest island in the world to be made entirely out of sand. There's not a rock in sight.Even the rainforest on the island is all growing on sand! There's 75mile long beach which acts as a motorway and airstrip. There's a shipwreck, lagoons and all sorts, including wild Dingos which tend to be quite aggressive and it's recommended that you don't have any contact with them.Oh, the waters here are totally shark infested too and they don't recommend anyone sets foot in the water. Our day on this island was mainly spend on a huge 4 x 4 bus which had 16 gears to go forward and two to reverse. This was necessary, as all the roads were made of sand. After a long journey through a rainforest, we had lunch, visited the shipwreck and bathed in the cold waters of the lagoon. The lagoon's water consisted of water of similar consistency to vinegar, which acts as a preservative and when bathed in takes at least 5 years off how old you look.Needless to say we ran in and out at least 4 times! The sand on the base of the lagoon was silica which was a brilliant exfoliator for the skin and also cleaned our jewelry!Needless to say, however pretty and interesting the island was, Sue-Ellen was glad when she got back to Harvey Bay as spending most of the day on a bus going over a lumpy sandy road did nothing for her travel sickness.Speaking of sickness, Sarah got a bit poisoned in an Irish Bar where we had our meal that night. She's allergic to meat fibers and we were thinking her fish cakes may have been fishy in more ways than one. ;)
