The Voortrekkers circled their wagons in a defensive position. There were 64 wagons, 1600 oxen and 1000 horses. About 450 men defended against over 10,000 Zulus. Only 3 Voortrekkers died but the Zulu suffered 3,000 casualties. The river ran red with their blood, hence the name.
