Hola a todos!
Thanks to everyone for the all of the comments and emails... keep them coming! I love hearing from all of you back home, and I only wish I had time to respond to you individually.
Well, we finally made it to Spain after spending 26 hours straight either on trains or waiting in stations. Because of the timing, weve decided to do Madrid first and Barcelona later, perhaps after Morocco. But Im not complaining! Madrid is fabulous... we really went broke in Italy, and its a great deal cheaper here. But thats not all. I can sum up our experience so far in two words - art and tapas!
The museums here are spectacular... the Reina Sofia stands out for me. I wasnt prepared for how huge it is... near the end of our visit I looked at my watch and was shocked to see that four hours had gone by, and Id barely noticed. It was chock full of modern art, which is my favorite. Lots of Dali, lots of Picasso (including the famous and powerful Guernica), tons and tons of Miro, some amazing sculptures, and lots of excellent contemporary abstracts. Id recommend it over the Prado any day.
And the other thing we love is all the Spanish food! I think tapas should be a worldwide phenomenon. You jam your way up to the crowded counter and order two or three raciones, then the waiter brings you little plates, perhaps huevos estrelladas (fried eggs), or pisto (a mix of grilled vegetables) or, our favorite, patatas bravas (fried potatos in an unidentifiable but exquisitely delicious sauce). A cerveza (beer) to wash it all down, or perhaps some vino, and you're set!
And whats next? Weve just reserved two nights in Granada, so that well have a full day to explore the glorious Alhambra, the ancient Arabian palace whose architecture is unrivalled the world over. Im excited :)
