Travelling by bus down to Pompeii, we travelled on the A1 South. From Rome we were to take 90 mins before reaching our first stop for a stretch of the legs. We were travelling along a 3 lane Motorway type road, when all of a sudden, in what seemed like the middle of nowhere, all three lanes came to a halt.
The bus switched off it's engine and people started getting out of their vehicles. It became clear that they were used to this type of thing. Turned out to be, about 10kms up ahead, a truck caught fire. It was carrying a load of bulls. Those at the front near the cab were fried. Others had escaped and were running up the Motorway.
After waiting for 90 mins since the bus engine stopped, the ignition was engaged and we were moving again. After a few kms moving with the rest of the traffic, we slowed down to a walking pace. We reminded like this for another 15 mins before we passed the burnt out truck and hit full speed again.
Not sure if they caught the run away bulls, but when we passed the accident there were no live bull(s) to be seen. On we went, with our Pompeii Tour rather delayed but didn't seem to worry anyone on the bus. Seemed everyone on the bus had watched 'Life of Brian' and we're taking to heart his advice during the closing red its, 'Always oil of at the bright side of life.'
