Think back to the 1950's and the start of the Cold War, when the US and Russians were ready to start a nuclear war. Canada, being in the middle wold have been where the incoming Russian bombers would have been shot down. Radar bases were built across Canada, to detect in incoming bombers and direct Canadian jets to shoot them down.
