It is a interesting train ride, leaving Bangkok at 7pm, and arriving in Chiang Mai at 10am. Most of the time there is nothing to see, except for city lights and the occasional small train station. The bunks are relatively comfortable, unless you are 6 ft 3inches tall - like me. Obviously, I didn't sleep too well and was up before 6am to catch the sunrise. Unlike most trains in North America, this is a Clickity-Clack train as the wheels pass over the short sections of rail. Also, this is a narrow gauge train, so it sways from side-to-side, something to get used to.
