In Bolivia we travelled with 6 of us all squashed into a 4x4, driven by our own Mario, for 4 days. We saw gysers, hot springs (we decided against going as it was freezing to come out!), lagoons with flamingos, alpacas and the ones that look like alpacas but aren't...still can't rememeber their name? On the final day we made it to the Salar De Uyuini (see photo) which is a vast salt flat. On this day we also discovered that there was a problem in our destination town of Uyuni. They were stopping people going in our out so Mario and his wife in their wisdom decided to sneak us in, getting us lost in the process, but successful all the same.
When we got to the town it was desserted apart from the locals milling about and stranded groups of travellers roamed the streets in search of secretly opened restuarants. Over the couple of days we were there the rumors pointed towards the blockades being on going so the guys organised an escape with some friends of the lady in our hostel.
In twos we were led to a garage on the outskirts of the town...joined also by Ben from the US (who the others met in Sanitago) and the two grls from our Jeep (Lucy and Grace from the UK)...watched by the locals as we wondered through the residential area with our backpacks. A couple of hours later under the cover of nightfall we set off, lights off, across towards the salt flats all on the watch for any sign of movement from the many fires of the blockades that went on for miles. Eventually we made it the flats where we met with a 'friend' to sell some gasoline, which had shot up in price on the black market. 7 Hours later we got on a bus to La Paz, and 5 hours later we were there.
In La Paz we shopped in the Witches Market, tried llama and cows heart and caught some of the dance festival. Here we were also joined by Jonathan from Santiago and met Wills (a Bristol lads coming up to Leeds) in our dorm we then all travelled to lake Titicaca for a couple of nights by the lake before heading to Peru.
