Spent a full day in Cancun exploring the two sides of the city - posh and poor. Visited the Zona Hotelera (all inclusive fat American world) walked along the white sandy beaches and the water was actually turquoise and so warm. After dipping our toes in the Caribbean Sea we got our unemployed selves back on the public bus to Market 28. After ignoring the constant calls to 'olá lady browse my shop' we found an amazing little gem of a restaurant and got ourselves scrambled eggs with a free surprise side of black beans while listening to two Mexicans playing traditional music. We spent our evening in Parque de Palapayas and experienced downtown Cancun with €1 quesadillas. Finished our night in cancun poolside playing Gin rummy and sampling two Mexican beers. Glad to announce Sarah was the champion beating Dani every time. Sarah and Dani playing against each other is troublesome because Dani can be a very sore loser. Next morning we got up super early to travel to Playa del Carmen. Arrived in the paradise town at 10am and could see the turquoise water from the bus station. Before we knew it though the stormy season had hit Playa del Carmen. As we thought we were too cool for school and free as bird crap, booking a hostel in advance wasn't for us but we were thought a lesson by the weather gods. The next hour involves two drowned rats trekking through flooded Mexican streets asking every hostel for 'dos beds por favor'. After seeing some interesting hostels we gave up, went to a cafe to use their internet and drink coffee. We frantically searched every hostel site for a female dorm but we had to settle for pricey mixed dorm. We then went on to book our next hostel in Tulum. We cracked!! Not the free spirited backpacker we thought we were! The two drowned rats arrived at the hostel and we instantly got a good vibe. Phew!! Dani asked the guy at reception if by any chance he had a female dorm. Unfortunately no, we both sighed and then his response 'Chica what do you want?' 'What would you like?' We both laughed and said nice guys?!! Thinking in our heads not big fat smelly men. We tried to freshen up in the room... Only ironic thing being that despite the floods outside the door the water in the hostel wasn't working. Eventually we managed to find a shower with a lukewarm dribble of water and set off to explore playa... Got food in la vagabunga which described itself as Mexican with a twist and it was really nice. We soon realised in a tropical storm there is nothing to do except drink beers in tequila barrel. We then bought tickets to coco bongos as you can't come to Mexico and not see that show. Before show time we decided as 'backpackers' we had to go to the supermarket for dinner and stock up on supplies. Probably wasn't our wisest choice to go to the biggest Walmart ever in a tropical storm. After kneeling underneath a hand dryer in the toilet to dry our clothes we spent 20 minutes queuing to buy our fruit and bread rolls. It was our first time in a Walmart and it definitely is an interesting place to people watch. One surprise was the random eaten chicken wing that seemed to fall from the sky when Sarah was in the peanut aisle. We rushed home to get in a small power nap before coco time. We almost went dressed completely as twins in our leather leggings black top and denim shirt but Dani's was still drenched from the tropical rain. We were a bit different to the American tourists on what felt like spring break in their little dresses and heels but we rocked our runners and enjoyed the free drinks and the show with our prime spot right by the stage. Went up dancing on the stage a couple of times and I'm sure we have a future on the stage after our epiic moves!! Got home at 4am to rest our tired eyes. All was going well until 6am when one of the other people in our dorm decided to unleash the weirdest talking/shouting/grunting in his sleep. At one point it sounded like there was a dog in our room as he barked and then almost fell off his bed which we hoped would wake him but no such luck. He seemed to be on a half hour loop or so we tried to ignore it but by 8am we were sitting up in our beds contemplating what we could throw at him from our top bunk prime position. We realised it was breakfast time though so got up and took a break from the bizarre noises. Off to Tulum in a few hours to continue the adventure down the Mexican coastline and according to our stalking of the weather app there is apparently sunshine. Great news welcomed by two pasty Irish girls wanting to lose the translucent whiteness of our skin. Fingers crossed for this hostel ;)
