The drive out from Pisco Elqui was slower, much slower. After our near death drive out to Pisco Elqui, the slow trip back into the big smoke was great. We were actually able to see what's outside. The vines in the valley extended all the way until the near vertical mountains of rock and rubble either side. Any small break in slope and there were vines on it. We arrived in La Serena and checked into Hostel Balmaceda, a new and expanding hostel that is much cheaper than the competition. We sat down to a cheap Chilean meal, the only ones in the restaurant that were not local!! The food was painfully cheap and had so much flavor. We paid $7 for two courses and a drink. Lunch was so big we had pot noodle for dinner (2 minute noodles). The rest of the day was filled with two museums, the archeological museum and one for two locally born Chilean role models (one that was an ex-president). The archeological museum had a few great parts including a mummy and many skeletons with animals buried around them; Lots of tools and lots of jewelry. The two best things were a ancient boat made from the skins of sea leopards ( catamaran style) and a Moai statue from Easter Island.
The museum of the locals had interesting items downstairs including clothing, photos and acts completed by the president and upstairs there were many very old items, like small sewing machines, irons, very old style hammers.
We finished our museum time and booked a tour to Parque National Pingüino for the 26/4 which is a group of islands for birds, otters, dolphins and penguins!! It will be a fun day tomorrow.
