Alcatraz 'a tour of the rock' Whatever I say will not do this trip justice...it was amazing. "You are entitled to food, clothing, shelter, and medical attention. Anything else you get is a privilege." Number 5 Alcatraz prison rules and regulations, 1934 1,545 men did time on Alcatraz but only a few of then were notorious - among them Al "scarface" Capone, "Doc" Barker. Alivin "Creepy" Karpis, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Floyd Hamilton and Robert Stroud. Most of the men were prisoners who had proved to be problems in other prisons - escape risks and troublemakers. Of the 14 attempted federal prison-era escapes, the best known occurred in June 1962, when frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin slipped into water. They used raincoats as floatations devices and were presumably heading for San Francisco. Although their bodies were never found, they are presumed to have drowned. Increasing maintenance and operating costs led to U.S Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to close Alcatraz in 1963. Did you know? * There were no executions on Alcatraz, although there were 5 suicides and 8 murders. * Prisoners remained on Alcatraz until they were no longer considered to be disruptive or incorrigible - an average of 8 to 10 years. * There were no female officers or officers on Alcatraz. Women prisoners could not be declared "incorrigible" until 1969, six years after its closure.
