Hello everyone.
Just thought I´d fill you in on a few things that I´ve been up to. Since writing last I´ve been pootling around Mexico having a marvellous time. In Cancun we said goodbye to most of the tour group (only three of us carried on) and hello to another four people. We´ve visited two more sets of Mayan Ruins (in Chichen Itza and Palenque), been swimming in cenotes (massive underground sink holes filled with fresh water), taken a river cruise through a canyon (very Lord of the Rings but without the Orcs and with a motor boat), watched a harrowing film about the zapatista uprising in 1994 including assassinations and loads of dead bodies and visited a couple of traditional Mayan villages. Its really interesting learning about their way of life especially as they mix the catholic and mayan religions and sacrifice chickens in church. They also have a very unhealthy fascination with Coca Cola which they also offer to god(s) in church. My particular favourite custom is that of young Mayan women who when they want to get married they pray to statues of St Anthony (patron of missing things) and if he doesn´t act fast enough they turn him upside down an put him in the fridge as punishment. I´m currently scouring the religious tack shops of Mexico to find me a statue of my own haha!
Another custom we have been taking part in is that of Tequila. I can´t write the results of the 7 tequila experiment on here because of the spies but there was a giant chicken involved, see photos soon! I will fill all non-spies in when I get home! You´ll be proud honest!
Anyway tomorrow we head back to Guatemala, to Lake Atitlan which has been described as the most beautiful lake in the world by somebody famous and important whose name escapes me right now. I´m quite looking forward to it.
Right I´m off to pack my stuff again (getting really boring now!)
Lots of love xxxxxx
