Hi Guys,
I'm currently in Ko Phi Phi, after arriving this morning, following a very heavy drinking session, and not much sleep, and then having to catch a rocky ferry to the island, which isn't a great combo!
Since my last post I spent a few more nights in Ko Phangan, and ended up going out to the Haadrin beach with my friends, it started of really calm but a few free drinks later and it turned into a heavier night than we expected.... I realised I was good at netball after scoring 2 nets/baskets I got 2 free buckets, which was good, but not so good the next morning!! There was a guy called John Rambo who sold buckets along with a load of other people, he clearly was Thai and looked nothing like the actual John Rambo, but I felt it was my duty to tell him that he was a credit to America, and that actually he deserved better than America.... I think he thought I was a weirdo who had drank too much.... If he did he was pretty spot on!!
I then moved to Ko Samui, and stayed in Lamai beach, which is not as touristy as Chaweng. The beach in Lamai was really nice, and we hired a jeep for the day so we could see the island and come and go as we pleased. We called our jeep Jermaine PadThai, he was so cool. He had no roof which was great as the weather was hot for most of the day but as we were looking round some shops it absolutely chucked it down and the inside of our beloved jeep was semi flooded. Driving in the rain with a wet backside isn't the nicest feeling and I had a feeling the locals were all pointing and laughing at us!!
After a couple of nights in Samui, I went to Ko Tao, where I met up with all my friends, we had a crew of 6. Ko Tao is really nice and is probably my favourite out of the 3 islands I had visited. THe area we stayed in was Sairee, where pretty much everything is, but the beach wasn't so nice, it was dirty and a lot of the time the tide was in so there was little beach space. I enjoyed the chilled out nature of the island though compared to the other 2.
We went to Shark Bay, which so far is the nicest beach I've seen. White sand and blue water, it was perfect. If you go out in a certain direction you have the chance of seeing sharks but my swimming isn't that great yet and those who did venture out didn't see any unfortunately. We spent 3 nights in Ko Tao, which was more than enough, as unless you aren't diving, which we weren't, then there isn't that much to do in the day, and I had, had my fill of sitting on a beach by now.
On Friday we caught a ferry to the mainland, and then a bus to Krabi, where we stayed the night. There isn't much to see or do in Krabi but we went to the night market and then met some more people in a bar. We were then told about a really good Thai bar, so we tried to find it. The directions were right, left, past the smelly market and right at the 7 Eleven. We got hopelessy lost, thanks to our own lack of direction and also bad directions from the locals, but we finally found it and it was worth it. There was a Thai guy playing the guitar and a Thai girl singing. It was easily the best bar I had been in. It was quite a sad night as it was my last with Ruth and Mollie, who I had been travelling with since I met them in the food car on the train to Chiang Mai. If you two are reading this then I just want to say thanks for allowing me to tag along, and also teaching me that great card game. I had a great time with them!
We stumbled back to our guest house at around 5am, and then got up at 8 for our ferry to Ko Phi Phi. THe water was really choppy and as I was on the deck I kept getting splashed but I survived the journey. Phi Phi is really nice, but the weather is very overcast and we've already had a heavy downpour.
The woman who runs our guest house is a bit militant, she gave us a number of rules, varying from no visitors allowed in our room, to not taking the towels to the beach, and also rules on flushing the toilet. I think she is beginning to warm to me.... not!!
I decided to have a hair cut and after watching Pat have his cut and realising the woman might do a good job I risked having mine cut. For 4 pounds it's not a bad haircut...... Beats having a rubbish afro! Ont he way to the hairdressers I saw an elderly Japanese lady get attacked by a squirrel. THe squirrel jumped on her and her reaction when she realised what it was, was priceless. Her 2 friends, who were the same age were in fits of laughter, and it took a passer by on a bike to rip the squirrel off her back, it was the funniest thing I had ever seen. I told Pat about it and I swear I've never seen a grown man so scared of walking down a section of a street!
There's been no horror stories this week thankfully, so this blog probably isn't as interesting. I've got a really dark tan, but as I've been wearing a watch, I've got watch tan lines....
I'm leaving Phi Phi on Monday to return to Bangkok, and then the plan is to go to Chiang Mai (again!!), and maybe do a cookery course, and then to Pai and Chiang Rai before crossing into Laos. I'll have been in Thailand for just over a month but I've really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to getting away from the islands and getting back into proper backpacking again.
So until the next time folks stay safe.
