We arrived at Ricketts Glen around mid afternoon to our pre booked lakeside camping spot which should give us a lovely view, however upon arriving it turned out the lake was empty due to the dam needing work. After having a drink we decided to take a walk around to see where everything was and read up on the park.
After finding the showers and toilets we carried on walking to an area called the amphitheater which I was expecting to be some sort of building but it literally was a few logs with a stage area. Just before the walkway to the amphitheater there was a board with warnings about not feeding the Bears and keeping food locked away to not attract them. Up till now reading all this we weren't really sure what to expect in terms of bear sightings so was not really thinking into it too much but as we stood there reading the board we heard movement in the trees next to where was was stood and looked around to see a black bear moving about!
Having never seen one we both jumped back and prepared to run although once we moved the bear seemed much it's frightened of us and quickly moved away through the woods. I managed a quick phone snap although not clear. It was crazy that we was just reading about them then one popped up next to us! By now we expected to see loads as we had only been at the park half an hour although after speaking to some people who had been staying there 3 weeks it transpired that none had been seen as far as they were aware and we was the first. In the end that was our only bear sighting but a bear it was!
That afternoon we took the cameras out fully expecting to be shooting bears left right and centre and done two of the hikes, one through the woods with a name something like the bear trail then that met the beginning of the beach trail which went all along the edge of the lake finishing back at the campsite.
After the hikes we went about cooking the food although the burgers smelt horrific so ended up being thrown away. The problem is the boot of the car gets so warm with outside temperatures reaching the mid 30s a cool box is needed but it's not possible when traveling living out of a backpack and having to fly about.
After some hot dogs and whatever other treats we had we went to bed on the hard gravel floor in our tent.
