chiang mai and pretty much the whole country has been celebrating new year now for the past 5 days and its insane! the whole city has been in a constant waterfight so you have to go everywhre armed with a bucket or supersoaker. we had a long journey the other day in a pickup truck so we got a dustbin filled with water and had a pretty good time getting passers by. went for an elephant ride the other day too which was great fun. have also been going round the night markets and seeing some great live music, and eating really good local thai food.
have also been on a three day trek which we all found pretty hard but was really good visiting all the local hilltribe villages and roughing it in the local accomodation, as well as washing in rivers! we played footy with the local kids too and got thrashed!
a few of us have been checking out the local temples, and the huge buddha statues, as well as the buddhist monks, which was amazing.
yesterday a couple of us went and visited burma, which was very diffrerent from here and the people hassle you to buy stuff, but it was great to go to. the guard at customs thought it would be funny to celebrate new year by hosing anyone who entered burma, and even though i waved my passport and camera at him i still managed to get soaked!
we also made it up north to the golden triangle where a river separates thailand, burma and laos, and we caught a long boat acsross the huge river to laos and checked out the markets, which was great fun. i was offered a lot of free drinks which had snakes and scorpions in, and ended up drinking a few which tasted pretty strange!
spent last night wandering around the local night bazaar and we found a wicked bar which played amzing rock music and a great atmostphere, will definately be going back there!
