Cicadas are the equvalent of crickets/grasshoppers in Europe in that they make an absolute racket all day and night for months on end. Spring is the loudest as the eggs buried in the ground hatch, and all the small cicada's crawl out and keep climbing up, shedding their exoskeletons as they continue to grow out of them.
