We went on a day trip to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City. A confluence of canals, waterways, boats, floating markets and islands. We arrived at the nearest town of My Tho which is about 85 km from HCM. The drive took us just over 2.5 hours to get there. We arrived in a small court yard and the driver indicated that we can hire a private boat to visit the may islands.
We met with the owners and had to bargin to get the fee down from $100 to $60.
We visited a number of islands including Dragon Island, Tan Tach Village and Hao Ai. We spent time where the Coconut Monk lived and died... he ran for the power and did not suceed and was repeatedly imprisoned by a number of governments and he died protesting - jumping off a building and setting himself on fire at the age of 81. We tasted honey from bee hives on one island, went on smaller boats through streams, ate coconut sweets and fruit on another island and finally had lunch on another where they also sold snake on the menu... (we could choose the type).
On the way back from lunch, we had a small incident where Isabel slipped and fell into the water.... I had to jump in immediately to rescue here.. getting wet and muddy in the process... I was in wet clothes for the entire trip back...
An eventful trip to the Mekong Delta............
