While we were in Cambodia we heard about sleeper busses - they're busses that have actual bunk-beds instead of seats! Amazing! So we made sure that the bus we booked from Cambodia to Vietnam was a sleeper one. However, if there is one thing that we have learned about South East Asia its that you can't guarantee anything! And, as we half expected, when we were picked up from our hostel we saw that the bus was just an ordinary one. We were a little disappointed but...

Luckily, prior to our departure from Bangkok to Siem Reap we decided to do some research about the journey, as we were considering taking the budget option of the third class train. As we were researching the journey, we stumbled across many reports and travel blogs of scams that took place whilst making this trip, no fewer than five scams set up to trick travellers into overpriced travel, overpriced entry visas (more than double the $20 they were supposed to be!...

To say our journey to Bangkok was an absolute mission would be an understatement! 18 hours on the road! We caught a minibus from Phuket and were on that for six hours, the driver was a lunatic! We were met at the travel shop where we bought our tickets to PP by a very full mini-bus. As our bags are so big the driver knew they wouldn't fit and so asked us to wait while he dropped a few people off. (this was fine by us as it meant that our bags could go in the boot instead of on the roof - it was tipping it down, and that we got to sit in the front seats - where there is much more leg room!) When we left Penang we were under the impression that it was a direct journey to Phuket, and as it was only our second bus trip we had no reason to think otherwise, but we ended up changing busses twice before we got to Phuket! Which is fine except that the bus just stops and you are told to get out and given your stuff, without warning - they literally don't tell you anything! If we didn't ask we wouldn't even know how long it was going to be until the next bus ...
