Hello All!
I am now over 3 weeks into my trip and am currently still in Chicago. I hope to pick up a car today and head west so I'm hoping that goes through okay. Since my last blog I have done Nashville, Memphis and Chicago. I had a really good time in Nashville. The hostel I stayed in was really quiet and relaxed and it was really easy to meet people there. Over the course of a few days a met loads of different people including the first English people I had met. My first night there a group of us went to the Grand Ole Oprey which was quite strange but a really good experience. The Grand Ole Oprey is the longest running radio station and is legendary in the country music scene. After that we all went to the main street where there were a lot of country music bars. I spent one more night in Nashville after that and then hired a car with an Italian guy from the hostel called Luca. We headed to Memphis in the evening and went to our hostel there. The hostel was really cheap but you needed to do chores. At the hostel we were put in the same room as two lads we met in Nashville and because public transport is so limited in Memphis we decided to hire a car between us all.
Memphis was good although it seemed to have a reputation for having high crime. Apparently they don't even have taxis because they kept getting robbed! I made it out of there in one piece though and while we were there we went to Graceland, Sun Studios and the Rock and Soul museum. Graceland was really good if a little wierd. I found it strange that there was essentially a theme park centred around a man's house and his grave. Sun Studios was brilliant, especially as we managed to get the tour for free. It was really small but it was amazing to think of what happened there. For those who don't know, this is where Elvis and Johnny Cash among many others made their first records. I have photo of me standing on the exact spot where Elvis stood which I may eventually get on here at some point.
From Memphis I headed to Chicago and as I am now getting told to leave the hostel I'll have to tell you about it another time.
Bye for now..
Ryan
