Well we have completed the drive. 2400 odd miles from freezing Chicago to 91 degrees F in L A when we arrived.
We left San Bernadino and had about 65 miles to cover to get to Santa Monica Pier. This is not the official end of route 66. This is at the intersection of Lincoln Boulavard and Constitution Street. We went to this location and it is not marked in any way. We then fought our way through the mother of a traffic jam to the pier where we had our photo taken at "The End" sign and received certificates from the Route 66 kiosk acknowledging our drive.
We celebrated with lunch at Denny's over a cheeseburger.
After leaving San Bernadino we stopped at Victorville at another route 66 museum. Here they have a 15 foot tall Hula Girl Statue, probably a World's Largest. This stood for many years at Miles Mahan's Hula Ville a 2 1/2 acre property which he lived on until 1995.
San Bernadino also boasts another Concrete Teepee Motel with 20 to 30 concrete tents which still operates as The Wigwam Motel.
Our drive into LA took us through Pasadena, down Sunset Strip and on to Santa Monica Boulevard via Beverley Hills.
The whole trip has been awesome. Our highlights were probably Walnut Canyon and the Endangered Wolf Sanctuary. However the lasting memory will be the people we met. Many eccentrics who work to keep "The Road" alive and many people who just went out of their way to give us advice or help. They are the small town Americans and we love them.
Peter leaves LA tonight for OZ and Elaine arrives tomorrow morning. I will meet Phil and Carol this afternoon to get our cruise tickets and Wednesday we board the Balmoral for our cruise.
Peter and I have reaaly loved this trip and loved sharing parts of it with you
This blog will continue on the cruise and I hope you are not getting tired of it. Feel free to post comments if you wish.
