Day 4 - Driving from Christchurch to Queenstown
Wow what a drive - 7 hours in total through some of the most amazing countryside.
After leaving the main highway 1 - we branched into the centre of the country towards Lake Taekapo. More and more beautiful vista's and SJ at the wheel - we were having a ball! We arrived at the Lake in time for lunch - sushi on the lakeside (there are a LOT of Japanese/Korean visitors here!). Again a view to die for as we look at the Southern Alps, all of which are covered by amazing lupins, they are everywhere and in full bloom.
Onwards towards Twizel and glad we didn't take a camper van - the roads are windy and steep on occasions. As we move through green hills, barren rocky enclaves, and everything in between the closest we can describe it is a combination of the Lake District/the Yorkshire Dales and southern Spain in the mountains! Around each new corner the view just gets better!
Finally down into Queenstown - we are actually staying in Arrowtown - in a dodgy motel - but they provide a free shuttle into the town - and the NZ barman provided some top tips on where to eat - so we ate pizza for tea in the Old Cow (picture of Queen Victoria's head!). Slightly strange addition to the pizza - sliced celery!
Day 5
Yesterday the weather girl forecast rain - and she wasn't wrong - its a day of wind and rain. So we decided to go River Surfing - OMG! Using a body board we surfed down the river - through Level 3 waves - and even through Roaring Meg! (see pictures from yesterday watching others do it, and then today of us!). I realised how unfit I am - managing only to do the run once - cliff did it twice!!
So we are in Café Patagonia - a chocolate bar - sipping hot chocolates and watching the clouds roll over the mountains - looking at the wonderful Queenstown Lake. Tonight its another restaurant tip - Fergh burger - the best burgers on the planet apparently!
Will let you know :)
Day 5 - cont
In the end the Fergh burger restaurant was a hip hang out too far - you know, lots of gormless teenagers, baseball caps, T shirts, ? length shorts hanging off their bums and tongs (flip fops to you and me). So we opted for sushi (again)!
I have to admit it but I was in bed and asleep by 11 - the surfing had taken its toll - we are so unfit!
