Merry Christmas all! We got to Auckland on time on the 21st and stayed in a cool, big hostel in the city centre for a couple of nights. It's not a very big city, but has a nice harbour to walk around, though we couldn't stay here long as there isn't much to do. On the 23rd we got the Kiwi Experience bus up to Paihia, Bay of Islands, a few hours North. On the bus, the scenery on the way was very English, as was the weather, so we definately felt at home!
We stayed at Pipi Patch hostel in Paihia which was quite small, but nice and we'd met some people on the bus who were cool and were also staying there in the dorms. We were due to go sailing and swimming with dolphins and then skydive on Xmas day, but the weather scuppered those plans unfortunately, but there's plenty of other places to do them throughout New Zealand. On Christmas day, we did however end up going banana-boating for 5 minutes before the rope attaching the boat to the banana broke when we went over. It was only meant to be 10 minutes anyway, so it was still fun but they gave us our money back which was a nice xmas present!
On Christmas eve we went to the village carol service which was pretty lame. What wasn't lame was the free tea, chirstmas cake and hotdogs. Needless to say we didn't need to cook that night. Christmas day and our hostel organised a christmas dinner in the evening, so everyone had plenty to drink and there was loads of good food to fill up on. It felt really weird to have xmas in the warm, and noone had an xmas tree or any decorations which was weird, and most activities and shops were still open.
On boxing day the weather of course turned sunny, but we were already booked on the bus back to Auckland, where we arrived back this evening. Tomorrow morning we are heading on to Mercury Bay on the Coromandel peninsula for a night before moving on again.
