As we promised ourselves, this was going to be a chill out day so we went to the Blue Lagoon. This is a must do on an Iceland trip. Sea water spilling in then volcanically heated and drifting around large pools forming a pastel blue shade from all the silica in the water. Add thousands of wallowing humans, a bar and day spa and it feels like several relaxing hours floating as part of a human soup. This is exactly what Chris and I did. Pre shower after getting into swimmers and a fluffy white day spa robe and walk down to the doors of the beautifully heated building looking over the tranquil waters steaming away at over 40 degrees in some places. Here in lies the problem.
The dash from the warm building to the hot water requires a few mins in the open air to remove the fluffy day spa robe, find an available hook and reach the water barefooted with only swimmers on. Needless to say when that arctic blast was still hanging around, this dash was done a lightening speed.
New tip for younger players, don't put your head under unless you can breath underwater. Once you take your head out the wind blows against your wet skin and turns your ears bluer than the lagoon. Lucky for Chris and I we realised this before it was too late and will be leaving Iceland with more ears than some Dutch painters. We wallowed with all the other wallowers for an hour then dared the Arctic blast 100 metres dash for a robe and a warm building for lunch. All good lunches should include chocolate and this was no exception and the wrapper had a picture of the lagoon. A chocolate that directs you to a warm day spa.... Can't be all bad for you. A bit more after lunch drinks and wallowing in the deep end under the bridges then back to the showers and bus back to Reykjavik.
Second item lost on trip was the cord to connect my camera to a computer to down load photos. Sorted this relatively easily in town, off to the library for some old school technology updated the photo on this blog then to a Christmas shop, a church and a postcard shop. Dinner at a Pakistani restaurant. Given Iceland has fish and crabs on all its coins, the native diet is a little less vegetarian that I can deal with. Had to settle for chocolate made in Iceland.
Tomorrow the adventure continues with horse riding to the geyser and Gulfoss waterfall. Actually, as it is already 4 am and the sun is rising I should say horse riding today.
