Yosemite today. Waited a while for the bus to collect us outside the hostel at the scheduled time of 6am. All dressed for hiking with boots and our warm coats. Was a little nippy at 6 in the morning so just as well Robbo had time to change from shorts to long trousers. Other people waiting for same tour were dressed as if they were heading out for a nice dinner - black suede boots!! Long drive to Yosemite stopped along the way and picked up some lunch for the day at a Safeway supermarket. Back on the road and one toilet stop later we were slowly making our way into the NP. Windows fogging - a little annoying but couldn't be helped. As we were heading up into the mountains the rain turned to light snow, we began to see it rest on the ground like a heavy frost and all of a sudden turn the corner and it's a full on winter wonderland. We began to praise ourselves for the sensible wardrobe choices, particularly Andrew who was very relieved he got the chance to put some long trousers on. Made it to our first stop Bridevail Falls. Unfortunately due to heavy snow we couldn't see the falls from the roadside so we chose to hike directly to the base of the falls. This is where Andrew discovered his shoes were definitely not waterproof and I discovered that without some form of headwear (hood/ beanie) snow can saturate you every bit as much as rain but worse because that stuff is cold!!!! The hike to base of falls took about 10 mins started out quite nice had to avoid some snow that had melted into puddles but were being covered by the fresh snowfall. As we got closer the snow fell harder and when we reached the base and looked up to the falls the snow was falling in the perfect angle to poke you right in the eye( which it did for Kim right as robbo decided to Film a video on the camera). The fact that it was snowing was amazing and the NP looked like a movie. It was just a little disappointing not to be able to see those things we came to see. Back on the bus much colder and wetter than when we got off, we started on to the next stop. Then on to park cafe gift shop for some hot chocolates and thawing out in the heated dining room. We then set out on a mini hike up to lower Yosemite falls. It was hard to take photos with all the snow so hopefully they all come out ok. Cafe round 2 for more thawing out with another hot chocolate and cookie. Back on the bus for our next stop - El Capitan and the Cathedral - two big rock formations on either side of the road - while we were there the fog started to clear and after 5-10 minutes we could see the entire mountain - very impressive. Robbo made a snow angel in the meadow while Kim took pics - mind you, he did it behind a fallen log so now one would see him! Next stop was another look at the Cathedral from around the bend and also Bridevail Falls which was much clearer now that the snow had stopped. One last final stop view looking back into the park on way out - was very pretty. We stopped next to a lake and could see the falls and all the mountains around them. Looked so pristine covered in snow . We were very wet and very cold and very tired and not looking forward to the 4hr bus ride home - but it was all worth it. Had a fantastic day.
We are knackered - shower and straight to bed for us!
