rob in central america
well i guess its been another week? or maybe not.
anyway it's too hot to be outside right now so i'll
enjoy the ac for a few minutes.
this week has been pretty nice..not as much rain. the
waves have been too big somedays to surf and the other
days humble me enough already.
last wednesday we were in the grocery for class having
to find ingredients to make dinner. i ran into an
americal guy who turned out to own the kayaking
company that our class took a trip with the first
week. we talked for a while and i asked him for a
job. he told me if i stay until november he'd give me
a job guiding sea kayak trips so i told him i'd think
about it. on thursday he came up to me on the street
while i was walking and said he needed some help...so
friday i jumped in a kayak and helped push the big
outrigger canoes into the surf and onto the beach. it
was probably the easiest 20 bucks i've ever made. i
got paid to do the same thing i had paid to do the
week prior. now that i think about it i'm not sure
how happy i am about that.
anyway picking up some extra cash is nice, especially
for something i enjoy doing.
so in case you were wondering soccer is kindof a big
deal down here. everything but the restaurants and
bars will close down during the games. watching the
world cup games down here has been a lot of fun...but
what's the deal with the czech republic? usa played
really well but those czechs were outsdanding. anyway
i think we can beat italy and ghana.
sunday morning i woke up at six and went offshore
fishing with three other guys for the morning. we
only caught 2 fish but spending the morning on the
water is always a good time...the views of the beach
and land were worth the trip.
my roommate and i have come to the conclusion that the
school we are at is modeled after mtv's the real
world. theres twenty something college aged kids from
all over the united states living in one big house
just off the beach. there are no tvs so we have to
entertain ourselves somehow...which isn't that hard to
do. but the drama has begun...three girls cried for
like two days straight and now have left for home.
almost every night someone comes home to thehouse way
too drunk and instead of helping them, most of the
kids just take pictures and laugh. and of course
there are the hook-ups, which is just funny once
everyone knows about it. anyway, we're going to start
video taping the shenanigins for the memories...and
blackmail.
nobody down here likes george bush...they call him
"hombre diablo" or devil-man. they talk about how
stupid he is and thus we americans are. then i remind
them that they don't even have an army and better
watch who they're talking to... i think that fact
along with me demanding they speak english has really
improved their opinions of americans.
well i guess that's all for now...this weekend the
waves are supposed to get up to 26 feet tall on the
face, so just pray for me that i won't show off too
much. hope all is well with everyone.email me to let
me know whats new.
sick of beans and rice,
rob
