After an emotional goodbye to Dad, a major panic when somebody took my rucksack by mistake and beef curry for breakfast a la Malaysia Airlines, I landed in Sydney on Thurs 19th Jan and met Treacle and Emma in arrivals. Knackered, but excited to see eachother, we jumped in a taxi to our hotel to discover that we couldn't yet get into our rooms. At over 30oC we were not keen to spend the day in the clothes we'd travelled in (Emma brought a gilet!!) so, classy as ever, we changed into shorts in a cupboard and headed out exploring.
I led us the wrong way out the door so instead of walking directly into town we had a very scenic tour, taking in the delights such as the fish market and getting our shoulders and faces very pink. Eventually we found Darling Harbour and had lunch overlooking the water which was cool, plus there was a giant rubber duck there for some reason!
We went back and crashed out, Treacle and I refused to get up at 7pm despite Emma being keen! We did however manage to force ourselves to walk across the street to buy a pot noodle for tea. One of Treacle's many firsts of the trip!
The next morning we were up and out and ready for a hardcore day of being tourists! So we first looked around the market to buy everything Treacle needed, then brought our tickets and boarded the sightseeing bus, you should have seen the smile on Emma's face! It was such an easy way to see the city, plus we had walked a long way the day before! Off we hopped at Bondi Beach and went for a paddle amongst all the skinny, tanned, bikini clad girls - we fitted right in! We retreated to a shady spot for a chill out, found some lunch then jumped back on our double decker which took us to the Sydney Harbour Bridge (did you know it's known as the coathanger? No, us neither) from where we walked round to the Opera House, which was more impressive from further away! Had a beer outside the Opera House then on the way home someone told us that it had been the hottest day in Sydney's history at 46oC, good job we had our suncream.
After our family breakfast on Saturday morning, Emma and Treacle walked me down to the train station. It was a bit emotional but I had the next leg of my trip to look forward to, plus the self-pride of getting on a train and off at the right stop all by myself!
Hopefully this link will take you to the photos of us in Sydney!
