So its about 10 days since we left you on the road to Mt Cook with Mr + Mrs H senior and as you can see from the pic we are well and truly down under.
Sure enough we had some pretty awesome lakes-and-mountains-style scenery, and woke up in some fairly remote and gorgeous spots. We even got dragged up a few hills by Mike and Jackie, and explored the odd glacier. The boys did us proud with a few BBQs with a backdrop of snow capped peaks... brrrr...
The time came to wave off our travel buddies and as they headed to the airport we made a 180 and headed down south, to Milford Sound, which lets just say lived up to the hype all you lovely lot had raved about! We finished our cruise a little late and the tunnel out of the valley was closed, the campsite fully booked, so we pulled in the carpark - more glamorous than it sounds! Waking up in the fjord and watching the sun come up over the 2km high peaks that surrounded us was pretty cool, even if we were bombarded by sandflies!
We've now decided to follow the 'Southern Scenic Route' - a U shape drive round the bottom of the South Island, taking in a load of walks and attractions en route.
Soon after we set off we made an obligatory stop at 'The Clifden Suspension Bridge' (!). I set about faffing with the camera tripod for a little while until I heard the sound of a strangled animal and Dan calmly asking me to 'step slowly' towards him. Well I raced across the bridge towards him as a bunch of frisky bulls emerged from the hedge and galloped towards us. Luckily they didn't fancy the look of said suspension bridge so we stood on the other side armed with a stick and waited for them to grunt their way away from our van, so we could tiptoe back over to safety....
Needless to say we found a nice little microbrewery that night (who knew there is a microbrewery in almost every Kiwi town?)
We now continue for another couple of weeks on a windy coastal path up to Christchurch, from where we fly to Australia on the 2nd Dec. I better dash, we are staying on a farm and its time to feed the lambs/calves/alpacas with all the 3-year-olds. 'No its not JUST for kids'....
