After we left you in Buenos Aires we thought visiting Iguazu deserved a blog entry all of it's own.
The trip started well on our 'Super-Cama' bus with full bed seats (we imagine how first class flights must be) and individual tv's. After the wine and Champers had flowed we had a great sleep and woke up back in the tropics, on the border of 3 countries - Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
As we had been busy in the build up we had little chance to consider the sheer scale of the falls. We spent 2 days gawping at both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides amongst the tropical rainforest teeming with Toucans, Turtles and Butterflies. Our first stop was the 'headline act' of the Devil's Throat which thunders over the falls drenching everyone in the vicinity and making it impossible to see the river below. Despite the torrent swallows fly around in the mist and nest behind the falls, well away from any predators.
The park is overrun with Coatis, which are a bit like racoons, and we felt the pain of one man who had his $25 lunch stolen by a gang of them in the time it took him to get his camera out to take a picture. We then watched them carefully unwrap the cellophane in the undergrowth and gleefully munch away. Lesson learned - don't be the first to buy food!
10kms away from one of the world's 7 Natural Wonders is one of the world's man-made wonders - the Itaipu Dam. Whilst a hydroelectric plant doesn't inspire oohs and aahs quite like a waterfall it was nevertheless an impressive sight in a geeky way. It supplies all of Paraguays electricity and 20% of Brazils (200million population) and is 8kms long.
We are tomorrow getting a flight to a Brazilian Beach (Ilha Grande) for a few days in an attempt to return home the usual 'slightly off-white' before finishing our trip in Rio. Fingers crossed for Brazilian air stewardesses living up to expectations....
