It's taken nearly 7 months and we are over 13,000 kms from home but we are finally at 'Fin del Mundo' (End of the World). It's all north from here.
After completing the trek in Torres del Paine we headed further south in Chile to Punta Arenas aiming to see some Penguins and for the rest period to begin. Luckily there was a colony that hadn't headed south yet and we visited an island of over 120,000 of the smartly dressed beauties. The noise and smell were something to behold but the experience was great fun and the boat ride included sealions and little black and white dolphins. One penguin in particular took a dislike to me and 'charged' me (for want of a better term relating to a 1 foot penguin) on numerous occasions.
We also managed to find our cheapest accomodation in Chile at our last stop. There were pros and cons, but it had attracted some longer term residents some of whom (genuinely) 'jammed' with a recorder.
From Punta Arenas we came to Ushuaia and finally left Chile behind. Welcomed into this part of the world by some 'friendly' signs from the locals we were pleased to bump into some friends we had made earlier in our trip, fresh back from their Antarctic trip, who conveniently possessed a driving licence. We joined them in a car rental and have had a great time exploring the area at the end of the world. The freedom to "just see what's at the end of the road" is a change to being reliant on buses and we got to explore much deeper and even see the sunrise from the National Park.
There will be some at home pleased to learn (probably not as pleased as Rhian though) that we have, due to a combination of rugby results and unpopularity of the English here, been introducing ourselves as Welsh..... It's been hard to swallow the rugby congratulations but it's nice to finally know what it's like to receive them! It must be rubbing off though, we had some Patagonian lamb last night and I could swear it's not as good as Welsh.
From here we are preparing ourselves for a culture and temperature shock as we fly to Buenos Aires this afternoon for a week before a few nights in Cordoba. Bye bye trekking trousers and fleeces :)
A very Happy Birthday from us to my Dad today too.
