Oh Give Me a Home Where The Buffalo Roam and The Deer and The Antelope Play!!!!!!
The drive through South Dakota is beautiful.....once you reach the Black Hills you leave the flat farm land behind......the views are great.....
We got to custer late in the afternoon.....It was a long drive from Sioux Falls and Steve was having a problem with his back.......he relaxed and I took the kids to the pool.....
The weekend we were there just happend to be Custer Days! The town celebrates with a parade which we watched ........and even sat on the curb....the parade started with 5 helicopters leading the way down main street and then the Clydesdales pulling a wagon with a dalmation on the top....lots of fun to see a small town parade the announcer knew everyones name!
After the parade we went to Jewel Cave....one of the largest caves in the world.....Note if you go you need to make reservations because the long tour 1 1/2 hours sells out fast....we were able to get the information tour which was 20 mins and you only go into the large cavern....still it is something to see and they also have a 1/2 mile loop trail that takes you into the forest......Definitely a must see if you get out there.
Stopped at the Purple Pie Place for ice cream on the way back to Custer
On Sunday we took a 9 hour tour of Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore. Its the best option if you want to see alot in just a day-
1st stop was The Crazy Horse Memorial it is very impressive - problem is they are privately funded so the work on it is going to take years to complete.....somewhere around 2050 but it's still worthwhile to see.
Next stop a ride thru the park - Needles Highway- Sylvan Lake both spectatcular!
Then lunch at the Grand Lodge in the park where they had a buffet with 3 different meats (Jake was in heaven)
Our guide called ahead to find out where the buffalo were so we wouldn't be disappointed........as you can see by the pictures we weren't dissapointed......
Last stop Mt. Rushmore- as both Steve and Jake said they thought it would be bigger.......it looked pretty big to me.....
Note we did see buffalo, antelope and deer!!
