Today we passed through the Panama Canal crossing from the Pacific Ocean through a series of locks and lakes in to the Caribbean Sea. It was a beautiful day and a long process. I woke up nice and early to have breakfast and with perfect timing to see us approaching the first set, the Miraflores Locks. It was pretty cool and pretty boring at the same time. The whole concept is neat to pass through a land mass by way of a man-made canal, being raised up and lowered down by the water but it took the Explorer from about 8am to about 6pm to complete the passage.
After breakfast, I went down to my cabin to start packing! Well…actually, I got back in bed to read for a little bit since I was really in to this book and wanted to finish it up. I just picked up my book and then my phone rings: LE is calling to tell me she has the key to Kenn, the Executive Dean's cabin and to meet her up there! He wasn't there, of course. YAY…we've been talking about how nice it would be to lounge out on one of the cabin balcony's this entire voyage and we finally get to. So I get dressed, and head upstairs. It was amazing. The suite was really nice and the balcony was huge…right up on Deck 7 with a prime view for us of the canal crossing. It was a shock coming from the inside cabin I have with no windows!!! We stayed out there on the balcony all morning just enjoying the luxury of it.
There was a BBQ out on Deck 7 Aft for the afternoon to let everyone be outside for the Canal and a nice end of voyage treat since there are no classes anymore. Tonight is the "No-Talent Show" which will be fun and give everyone something to do. ISE/SAS plans a lot of time for "Reflection/Re-Entry" and packing this week which we've all done but I think the students are getting bored.
Other than that, not a whole lot else is going on.I don't think I ever really believed I'd be saying 3 DAYS LEFT!!!!!I finally did start cleaning out my cabin and packing. So far, its not so bad. I think everything will fit just fine. Another little reality check was an e-mail from Maritime HR about some paperwork to return from my leave. You mean I have to go back to work??? I have mixed feelings about it, but at the same time, I am also looking forward to returning. Being able to go back to my job is a nice luxury that I have most of the other RD's do not. It will, at the very least, provide me with a paycheck while I sort out the rest of my life. LOL.
I can almost count the hours!
