Hello everyone, this is a belated Rio blog, only 1 week late, we've finally found an internet cafe with good internet. We had an amazing time in Rio, the whole week was a big party, everyone out on the streets enjoying themselves and lots of impromptu street parties, parades and samba bands practicing ahead of the Sambadromo parade. (This is the main event of the carnival, where samba schools compete late into the night and then the winner is announced the following day.) The weather was really good and it only rained at night so we took full advantage of the daytime and did a "Rio tour" which cost about 25 pounds and included the Christ Statue, Maracana stadium, the Sambadromo, the metropolitan cathedral and finally Sugarloaf mountain to watch sunset. On other days we visited the very chic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the latter being nicer but the sun was really scorching so we didnt stay too long. Back at the Copa Hostel we met lots of people, the majority of which were either american, english or australian. It was clean and well equipped, we liked it, especially as it was free! (due to the first hostel closing down). The week went really quickly and before we knew it, it was time to head back to Santos. The food was great, we ate mainly at per-kilo buffets, (you fill your plate, they weigh it, you eat it) One thing we noticed is there are so many homeless street kids in Rio, i guess they come to the tourist areas to try and beg for money, its sad though because they can't be much older than 9 or 10. Check back soon for more news and pictures
