So, I landed in Perth and spent a day and a half getting to know what I think I will eagerly say is my favourite Australian City. I went to the Suburb Fremantle, little beach town where I managed to bag a free dinner with my friend just for buying a coke! We then went to a beach called Cottesloe where we watched the sunset and were able to have a little twilight paddle as the beach has floodlights at night. The sea was still pretty chilly but I'm sure warmer than over in Sydney or down on those cold south coast beaches!
I took a bus from Perth to a place called Narrogin, about 3 hours south east of Perth, where I was met by Judy. My new Boss. It took us another 45 minutes to drive to Harrismith where the Pub I work at is. Narrogin is the nearest civilisation. We drove into Harrismith and were very nearly passed it as we arrived at The Oasis Hotel. I was welcomed by Elin from Sweden who works with me, Russell, Judy's wife and Co-owner of the pub and their farm, and a ferrell cat in a cage. I unpacked and after just 4 hours of being in Harrismith I was behind the bar and straight to work ona busy Friday night.
I met more Australian's in that one night than my entire time in Australia so far. Harrismith is an area of sheep and wheat farming, so most of the people (middle/old aged men) who come to the pub are shearer's or farmers of some kind. There are a few youthful looking souls who are gearing up to take hold of the family business so it's not all grey hairs and wrinkles.
My daily routine (apart from Wednesday as that is my day off) goes a little like this...
9:30 clean kitchen/bar/toilets/campsite/"dongers"(accommodation for men working away from home)
12:00-2:00pm Lunch time, cook if people come in for food...steakburgers, fish and chips, toastie's etc
2-4:30(or 5:30 if your on the lucky rota for the day) break...usually consists of a walk in the bushland and a little sunbathe or a nap if I'm feeling overly tired!
5:30-10pm(sun-wed)/12am(thurs-sat) work either behind the bar or in the kitchen. This alternates every day. In the kitchen some people come for fancier meals than burgers and fried food and yes...I cook it! Chicken parmagana, steak, pan fried fish, lasagne, schnitzel, beef and reef(surf and turf) I am quite the cook and can throw together a mean steakburger in less than 10 minutes!
I love working behind the bar on the weekends. It gets really really busy..surprisingly enough!! There is a Harrismith cricket team, they even have a cricket ground, be it not very green, here in Harrismith! They just finished this past saturday night(12th) and they were in the grand final for the area but sadly drew and lost due to some bonus point default rule or something. So most Saturday's were filled with the cricket lads celebrating their win. On wednesday's and thursday's Russell has a betting account so people come in to gamble their money away on the horses. The Aussie Rules Football season is starting soon as well so that should bring in a few customers!
So I celebrated my Birthday in Harrismith. Thank you all so much for my lovely gifts! Was really great to have something to open on my birthday, I still have my cards up on my dresser! I definately demolished those percy pigs pretty quickly....good call on those!! But thanks again for my cards, gifts and money. Wish I could have gotten to speak to you Thomas' when you were down at 12 Pen Y Ffordd but it won't be long before we can chat in person now!
So I am just plodding along in the country. I went to a pig farm on my day off the other day. They have over 1000 pigs on their farm! Lots of babies and adoloscents! They do bite pretty hard though those little b*****s! I'm going horseriding tomorrow on my day off followed by some well deserved sun bathing I think...About time I took advantage of this beautiful Western Australia sun. Another plus for the west, the weather has been the best I've had in my time in Australia. I have been here 4 weeks now and not seen a drop of rain, and maybe 2 days where it was slightly cloudy, and it's not humid! Winner!
Hopefully my updates haven't been too indepth. Sorry for the lack of photo updates. My internet connection isn't strong enough to upload my photos. I will fill you all in if I shear a sheep, or visit any more great beaches or find any more deathly spiders!! yuck!!
Love to all xxxx
