Landed in Honolulu, where it was about 40 degrees. Neither Jamie or myself had any clue where we were going or where was good to go. Thank God for the information points in airports which have free-phones that ring local hotels! I had learned to rely on these when landing in a new place. Waikiki Beach seemed like the place to be, but also very busy. Hawaii was as beautiful as I I expected.
The hostel we arrived at was a funky little joint very close to the beach, but in a slightly shady area. There were several suspicious characters lurking around in the streets nearby. Room mates we cool as usual. We immediately got along and made plans to go to Pearl Harbour the following day. It was an hours journey on a sweaty bus and absolutely packed with tourists but nevertheless we rented the audio guides for an extortionate price and walked through S.S. Bowfin. The tour was very interesting but I had had enough after 30 minutes! Had dinner with everyone in our dorm that evening.
The following day myself and two girls from Holland rented a car and drove round the island and saw stunning beaches, complete paradise. George would love it! As we pulled back into the hostel carpark I recognised a couple of faces, Hannah and Anastassja that I met in NZ! Which was a lovely surprise. Managed to find an over 18s club which i could go into, being the only one who was under 21, but at a price! I had to dance the night away with huge crosses drawn onto both hands in thick black marker pen. Good look. They ask that u pay a deposit before you enter and if you are caught drinking you don't get it back. Luckily I didn't get caught and I did get plastered. So six of us headed back to the hostel at 5am and on the way we witnessed a hoe fight, a police chase, and an arrest. Welcome to America. These two extremely attractive, blonde, "size zero" young women were on the sidewalk slapping each other, ripping hair out, scratching faces and screaming at each other. All the while a man was watching them from about ten feet away, pimped out, coated in jewelry and, get this, a fur coat!!! I was sweating in a tiny dress! Obviously the girls pimp. Funniest thing I have ever seen.
Last couple of days spent in Waikiki were wet, I was lucky to have good company. I was very impressed with Hawaii and with more time and money I could have done a lot more. Everything is expensive and perhaps it isn't the best place for backpackers! I'm not sure what I had expected Hawaii to be like, I certainly didn't think it would be as built up as it is. I fell in love with it nevertheless!
