SAN JUAN DEL SUR
Hey team! Hope all are well!
Things here in Nicaragua are cranking along nicely… Last Friday, after a week of teaching the little ones, Johnny and I headed to Nicaragua´s most famous surf spot - San Juan del Sur. It´s a series of beautiful beaches with breaks ranging from baby to massive - lots of tourists and expats but a nice cruisy vibe all the same.
We met up with Brendan, Johnny´s old flatmate from Christchurch and enjoyed a corona on the beach at sunset. It was very nice until a local drug dealer took offence towards Brendan (¨This is my town Gringo!¨)- but thankfully moved on without incident. Never a dull moment.
On the Saturday Johnny and I headed out to Maderas - where the big kids surf - to take a look. The beach looked amazingly New Zealandy - but the difference was the water temperature - so nice and warm we could´ve stayed in all day! We missed our shuttle back to the main beach (about 20 minutes by truck) and set about trying to scab a ride back in time for our 3.30pm fishing appointment. Not a single car was leaving it seemed, until we happened across an unlucky South African who had stepped on a stingray and had to get back to nurse his very swollen foot. His misfortune was our luck as we crouched in the car boot about the size of a shoe box and Johnny networked with the British graphic designer lass in the back seat while we jutted down the rutted road.
Back at San Juan we headed out on our fishing excursion and were delighted to find two Kiwis from Balclutha on our boat! It was so nice out there on the water - we could see Costa Rica in the distance - but unfortunately the fish weren´t biting. We did however see two turtles making lurve - oh yeah. Johnny hooked a Chancho - a local fish that´s not for eating - and I got an undersized snapper, which I wanted to throw back but the captain kept. I had already turned down his offer of a dinner date and a job as receptionist in his business, so I didn´t want to argue. We motored back into shore with another beautiful sunset as out backdrop, and remorsefully sought out some chicken for dinner…
Sunday Johnny and I rented a single surf board and tried our luck on the baby waves of San Juan - it was Johnny´s first time surfing and he stood up a few times so that was good! We headed back to Granada with Brendan in tow that afternoon, an awesome weekend it was. This weekend: the city of Leon.
God bless you guys!
