My close second-favorite work in the Louvre, partially because of the insistence of my Byzantine Art professor Dr. Cutler that this is the greatest inlaid carving in the entire world, and partially because in person, it truly is. Called the "Barberini Ivory", the craftsmanship is simply unparalleled in the entire museum, and there are few other sculptures in the world that can approach the detail.
