The she-wolf suckling two babes is an image that covers much of Siena and has an interesting origin. Siena wanted to make itself a glorious city, just as Rome did, yet it had no glorious past. What Virgil's Aeneid did, set up Rome as the "children of ancient greece" Siena also wanted to do. They had someone construct the myth that the sons of Romulus and Remus, who were first raised by the she-wolf, were taken by the she-wolf to Siena, where they were raised and founded the city.
